Supportive services in a safe and healing environment encourage growth, resiliency and independence.
Niles Organic Gardens and Markets
The organic no-till garden and Niles Garden Market are unique to Niles Home and offer a connection between nutrition and good health. Youth, staff and volunteers work together to plant and harvest a plentiful supply of fresh fruits and vegetables. The garden, water garden and gazebo are integral to academic instruction and therapeutic intervention at Niles Home. The Niles Garden Market is managed and operated by Niles Home youth under the guidance of our urban gardener. It serves as an outlet for youth participants to sell produce to the community while developing entrepreneurial and customer relations skills. The Niles Garden Market also increases community access to low-cost, organically grown foods. Through a partnership with the Housing Authority of Kansas City, Missouri, Niles Home developed a new community garden and garden market at the Clymer Community Center.
Substance Abuse Prevention/Treatment Services
Substance Abuse Prevention/Treatment provides services to youth identified as high risk for drug use based on family history of substance abuse, early experimentation or use, lack of healthy role modeling, and problems in school or juvenile delinquency. Treatment services are for children already using substances by the time they arrive at Niles Home. Services are provided by a certified substance abuse counselor and include weekly individual sessions and group sessions. The goal of this program is for youth to abstain completely from the use of alcohol, tobacco and illicit drugs.
Transitional Living Skills
Niles’ therapists provide transitional living services for youth preparing to exit Niles Home or former clients of Niles Home, in particular those who have recently aged out of the foster care system. Services assist youth with strengthening life-skills and applying behavior management skills in the “real world” after leaving Niles Home. Transitional living services assist clients with social and health needs, establishment of a service plan and referrals to other community based services. Wrap-around referral services connect youth and families with basic essential needs related to housing, education, and transportation.
